Understanding Eyelid Surgery

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure that improves the look of the upper and lower eyelids by addressing excess skin, protruding orbital fat, and fine wrinkles.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty focuses on heavy upper lids that may obscure the eyes or interfere with vision.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty corrects puffiness, bags under the eyes, and prominent lower eyelid fat.

For some patients, Dr. Gibstein recommends a transconjunctival blepharoplasty, which uses an incision placed inside the lower lid to remove or reposition fat without removing eyelid skin.

The result of the blepharoplasty procedure is a more rested and youthful appearance, while maintaining the eyes’ natural contours.

Where Surgical Skill Meets Artistic Balance

What Is the Eyelid Surgery Procedure Like?

Your journey begins with a detailed consultation and physical examination. Dr. Gibstein will review your medical history, discuss any use of blood thinners or herbal supplements, and evaluate your eyelid skin and surrounding structures.

During the blepharoplasty procedure, small incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid or along the inside of the lower lid. Through these access points, Dr. Gibstein can remove excess skin, gently remove or reposition excess fat, and refine the eyelid’s shape.

Surgery may be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the procedure and patient preference. Patients go home the same day with careful aftercare instructions to support the healing process, including the use of cool compresses to reduce swelling and avoiding contact lenses during recovery.

What Conditions Does Blepharoplasty Treat?

Blepharoplasty is a versatile procedure that can address both cosmetic and functional concerns, including:

  • Excess skin or excess eyelid skin that hangs over the upper eyelid
  • Puffy lower lids from displaced orbital fat
  • Bags under the eyes that topical treatments can't correct
  • Dark circles or shadowing caused by bulging fat pads
  • Sagging eyebrows or eyelid ptosis that contribute to a heavy expression
  • Fine wrinkles and crow’s feet around the eyelids
  • In some cases, blepharoplasty surgery can also improve peripheral vision obstructed by heavy upper lids.

What Are the Benefits of Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty provides subtle but meaningful rejuvenation that improves the appearance of your eyes by restoring clean, youthful contours. Benefits include:

  • A more alert, refreshed look
  • Smoother eyelid contour with reduced puffiness
  • Brighter eyes that look rested rather than tired
  • Long-lasting results, often 10–15 years
  • Enhanced confidence in both professional and personal settings

For some patients, results may be complemented with skin resurfacing or fat grafting for more comprehensive rejuvenation.

A Surgery Designed Around You

Am I a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Candidates for upper or lower eyelid surgery typically include adults who struggle with:

  • Heavy upper lids or drooping upper eyelid skin
  • Puffiness in the lower eyelid or with fat pads
  • Difficulty wearing eyelid makeup due to hooding from excess skin
  • A desire for brighter, more youthful eyes

You may not be a candidate if you suffer from severe dry eyes. Dr. Gibstein will carefully review your medical history and conduct an eye exam to confirm candidacy.

Guided Recovery, Every Step of the Way

Blepharoplasty Recovery

Most patients find recovery comfortable and manageable. Swelling and bruising are expected in the first week. Using ice packs, cool compresses, and keeping the head elevated helps minimize swelling and speed the healing process.

You will need to avoid strenuous exercise, direct sun exposure, and contact lenses until cleared by Dr. Gibstein. Stitches are usually removed within one week. Most patients resume light activities within 7–10 days, though refinement continues for several months.

Dr. Gibstein and your patient care coordinator provide detailed aftercare instructions and remain fully accessible throughout your recovery.

Blepharoplasty Results

The results of blepharoplasty are visible within a few weeks as swelling subsides. Patients notice brighter, smoother eyelids with a more youthful and rested appearance; for many, results last more than a decade.

Beyond physical improvements, many patients describe feeling more approachable, refreshed, and confident. The transformation is subtle yet powerful, restoring the expressiveness of your eyes without changing your identity.

Blepharoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Both terms describe a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and removes fat to improve the appearance of the upper or lower eyelids.

Upper eyelid surgery corrects heavy upper lids by removing excess eyelid skin and restoring a natural crease and contour.

Lower eyelid surgery targets puffiness and lower eyelid fat, often using a transconjunctival incision within the lid to avoid external scars.

Yes. Many patients choose combined upper and lower eyelid surgery for complete rejuvenation in one session.

Rare but possible complications include dry eyes, temporary changes in skin sensation, issues at the surgical site, or nerve injury.

In select cases, lasers can be used to make incisions or assist with skin resurfacing. Dr. Gibstein will advise if this is an appropriate option.

Not directly. Blepharoplasty surgery reduces puffiness and sagging skin, but additional treatments like Botox, skin resurfacing, or dermal fillers may better target crow’s feet or dark circles.

If sagging eyebrows are contributing to hooded lids, a brow lift may be recommended alongside eyelid surgery.

You’ll need to avoid blood thinners and certain herbal supplements and quit smoking beforehand. An eye exam may also be required.

Most patients heal within 1–2 weeks, but the full healing process continues for several months.
